A HALF-TON of food. How many meals?

A HALF-TON of food. How many meals?

During the first six weeks of their annual summer food drive, EAMC’s Friends Feeding Friends (F3) collected 926 pounds of unopened food from vacationers leaving the island. What impact will that amount have on the hungry in our area?

In 2014 the Economic Research Service (ERS) division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated that Americans consumed on average 1885 pounds of food per person per year. That equates to 1.72 pounds per meal on average, assuming three meals per day. At that rate, 926 pounds of food will provide 538 meals for the hungry!

The folks at Share the Table, the food pantry of the Greater Topsail area, are most grateful for these donations. Sincere thanks to all the volunteers who don their bright yellow F3 shirts on Saturday mornings and wait for the cars to roll through the Max’s Pizza parking lot to deliver their surplus food, both perishable and non-perishable.

We still have five Saturdays of collections left. Please tell your friends, neighbors and renters about the drop off. When you clean out your cabinets before you leave the island, remember that we will be collecting through September 1. Or drop off your unopened extras at the pantry— on the mainland in Surf City— during the week. Hours and location

F3 COLLECTIONS: Saturdays, 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. until September 1 at Max’s Pizza, Hwy 50, Surf City, on the right just before you go over the swing bridge. Questions? Contact Julia Sherron.
